Live vs async online coaching, what you're paying for

Search for online personal training and you'll find two very different products wearing the same name. Both come with a real, certified human coach. The difference is when that coach shows up. In one model, the coach works around your training. In the other, the coach is there during it.

Full disclosure before we start: I build Bespoke Fit, a live coaching service, so I have a side here. But the two models are different enough that laying them out plainly helps everyone, including the people who should buy the other one.

Async coaching: a real coach who's never present

Async coaching works like this. A human coach writes your program. You train alone, on your own schedule. Communication happens around the workouts: messages, weekly check-ins, and video reviews where you film a set and the coach sends notes back later.

This is the model behind most of the big names. Future is $199 a month. trainwell is $149 a month, billed quarterly. Caliber's 1-on-1 coaching is reported around $200 a month and up, with exact pricing gated behind a consult call. Kickoff starts around $95 a month. RP Strength runs $349 to $599 a month for its coached tiers.

The coach at these services is real. They know your name, adjust your plan, and answer your messages, often within hours. They're just never present while you train. Every rep you do, you do alone.

Live coaching: the coach is on the call while you train

Live online coaching means the coach is on video with you during the workout itself. Not reviewing a clip afterwards. Watching the set as it happens, cueing you between reps, changing the plan on the spot.

Fewer companies sell this, because it doesn't scale the way async does. Echelon Coach sells live 1-on-1 sessions for roughly $40 to $80 each. Forme charges $399 a month for four live sessions. Bespoke Fit, the one I build, is $299 a month at the founding member rate, flat, with unlimited live 1-on-1 video sessions.

Same category, but notice the billing shapes differ: some charge per session, some charge flat. That difference matters more than it looks, and I'll come back to it.

What async coaching actually buys

Async coaching buys you three real things: structure, expertise, and a lower price.

Structure means a program written for your body, your equipment, and your goal, progressed week to week by someone who knows what progression should look like. Expertise means a human who can answer "should my knee feel this" with judgment instead of a search result. And the price is the headline: at $95 to $200 a month, most async services cost a third to half of live coaching.

For a lot of people, that's a genuine upgrade over a $15 template app. A template doesn't know you exist. An async coach does.

What async coaching structurally can't buy

Some things only exist when the coach is present during the workout. Not "the app doesn't offer them yet". They can't exist at any price in an async model, because they happen inside the session.

First, corrections while the rep is happening. A live coach sees your squat drift forward and fixes it before the next rep. An async form check reviews a recording of a mistake you then practiced for the rest of the session. I wrote a full piece on why that timing gap matters so much: why a coach watches every rep.

Second, load decisions made in the moment. How fast the bar moves tells a coach whether you've got more in you or whether the set should end now. That signal exists for a few seconds and then it's gone. A spreadsheet filled in afterwards can't carry it, and neither can a video reviewed tomorrow.

Third, the accountability of an appointment. With async coaching, skipping a workout means ignoring a notification. With live coaching, there's a human already on the call at six o'clock, in your calendar, waiting for you specifically. People break promises to apps all the time. Breaking them to a person who's sitting there is much harder.

RP Strength at $599 a month still can't cue you mid-set. That's not a knock on RP Strength, whose programming is excellent. It's just what "the coach isn't there" means. No amount of money fixes absence.

Inside live coaching: pay per session or pay flat

There's a second split that gets less attention, and it sits inside the live category: per-session pricing versus a flat subscription.

Per-session pricing sounds fair. Echelon Coach at $40 to $80 a session, Forme at $399 a month for four sessions. You pay for what you use. But here's what I think it actually does: it reopens the "will I train today" negotiation every single time. Each session is a fresh purchase decision. You count credits, you save sessions for when you "really need" them, and every skipped workout comes with a built-in justification: at least I didn't spend the money.

A flat unlimited subscription closes that negotiation once. You've already paid. The fourth session this week costs exactly nothing extra, so the only question left is when, not whether. That's why Bespoke Fit is $299 a month flat with unlimited sessions instead of a session pack. Consistency is the entire game in fitness, and pricing should push toward more sessions, never fewer.

If you're comparing live services, ask this one question: does booking one more workout this week cost me anything? If yes, the pricing model is quietly working against your consistency.

When async coaching is honestly the right buy

Async coaching is the right choice more often than a live coaching founder should probably admit.

If your technique on the main lifts is already solid, you've trained consistently for a year or more without anyone making you, and budget is tight, buy async. Future at $199 or Kickoff at around $95 will give you smart programming and a human to ask questions, and you don't need someone watching you train. We keep honest head-to-head comparisons with the async services if you want details.

Where the cheaper option gets expensive is quitting. Most people who start a program stop within a couple of months, and a $149 a month subscription you abandon by week six costs more than any subscription you actually use. The real price of coaching isn't the monthly fee. It's the fee divided by the results, and a plan nobody holds you to often divides by zero.

So the honest question isn't "which is cheaper". It's "which one will I still be doing in March".
